Schedule your maintenance, or it will schedule you

Fifteen minutes a month on purpose beats a lost weekend by accident.

Systems need attention whether we plan for it or not. The difference is whether that attention happens on a quiet Tuesday evening or in the middle of something important.

A monthly checklist

  • Apply pending updates and reboot if needed.
  • Run the backup restore drill.
  • Check free disk space and certificate expiry dates.
  • Skim the logs for anything new and strange.
  • Delete one thing you no longer use.

The last item matters more than it looks. Every service you stop running is one less thing to update, back up and worry about.
